Taking Action and Leaving a Mark - The Ecological Handprint

Reducing our own footprint is not enough to stop climate change. But what else can we do? We'll show you how you can take climate protection into your own hands and make a real difference - from neighborhood projects to major initiatives with a political impact.

The Ecological Footprint - This term is probably familiar to everyone, and most of us have likely calculated it at some point. Reducing our own CO2 emissions or other climate-damaging influences has been the main topic for years when it comes to what we can all do against climate change.

However, focusing solely on the ecological footprint is not enough to tackle the environmental crisis. In industrialized countries like Germany, it is practically impossible to live a climate-neutral life. No matter how much we reduce our footprint, an emission of less than 5 tons of CO2 per year is ultimately hardly achievable. This is because there are many factors beyond our direct control that influence the footprint, starting with infrastructure to the products we find in the supermarket.

Small Steps, Big Deeds

It is not enough to just reduce our own influence. On the contrary: we should all enhance our positive impact on the climate as best we can. Many know the feeling of being almost powerless in the face of complex issues. Should I rather buy organic tomatoes in plastic packaging or the conventional ones without packaging? And are local products more important than seasonal ones, or is it perhaps the other way around? Do such decisions make any difference, and can we do anything at all? This is where the principle of the ecological handprint comes into play. Contrary to expectations, we all have many opportunities to commit to climate protection and sustainability and to make a decisive difference.

The idea of the ecological handprint originated in the early 2000s at the Center for Environmental Education in India. Inspired by ten-year-old Srija, who advocated for more positive action for the future, the handprint was born as a measure of constructive environmental commitment. Unlike the footprint, the handprint is optimistic and motivating. Instead of focusing only on reducing negative influences, it encourages active good deeds and contributing to more climate protection. For example, deciding to switch to green electricity is a good start but only reduces one’s own footprint. However, if one advocates for others to switch to green electricity, one thus enlarges one’s handprint.

One’s own handprint can be left in various areas of life. This includes actively talking about the climate and discussing structural changes to create greater awareness of each individual’s possibilities.

Professionally, we can also ensure that our field of activity becomes part of the solution rather than the problem, whether by choosing sustainable projects or initiating climate actions within the company.

In the Thick of It, Not Just On the Sidelines

But the handprint is not limited to everyday life. Especially in the social environment, there are numerous opportunities to bring about positive changes. The options range from promoting climate-friendly lifestyles to spreading and expanding renewable energies to organizing large environmental protection projects. Political pressure and collective actions are also effective levers to bring about changes on a societal and political level.

The principle of the ecological handprint is participation, self-design, and the opportunity to motivate others to commit to a sustainable future perspective.

Reaching as many people as possible and inspiring them for climate protection - that is also our goal at Climate Connect. Our climate participation days enable everyone to get started in climate engagement. Through supra-regional networking, we want to make climate protection possible for everyone and make the enlargement of the individual handprint as efficient as possible. Because a central aspect of the ecological handprint is the idea of collective self-efficacy. One’s own handprint is not only determined by one’s own actions in the immediate environment. Especially the influence on others and the associated multiplication of one’s own possibilities also exponentially increases one’s own positive effects on climate protection.

Projects such as Stecker-SolÆR or the BürgerEnergieTag illustrate how great this influence can be: everyone can naturally deal with renewable energies themselves, improve their energy efficiency, and even get a small balcony power plant for home use. However, the members of these two projects have gone many steps further, started initiatives themselves, inspired many other people to use solar energy, or even enabled the planned construction of an energy park in Potsdam. By working together for positive changes and raising our voices, we can exert a significant influence on politics, business, and society.

Together we can shape a sustainable future and overcome the feeling of powerlessness that many feel in the face of the climate crisis.

Of course, this does not mean that reducing one’s own footprint is of no importance. The goal should be to live sustainably oneself and at the same time actively engage to make a difference beyond one’s own environment. In principle, one’s own footprint can only be reduced by about a third. Therefore, it is all the more important to additionally focus on one’s own possibilities for action and one’s own handprint.

Interested in learning more about this topic and considering getting involved yourself? Then we would like to highly recommend the book “Hoch die Hände Klimawende” by Gabriel Baunach. Here you will learn everything about the handprint - from common climate misconceptions, dealing with one’s own emotions about the climate crisis, to practical tips for initiating your own first projects.

In a time when every contribution counts, one’s own actions play an even greater role. By becoming active ourselves, we can not only reduce our own ecological footprint but make a decisive difference in the fight against climate change.
